The normal procedure for an implant involves first taking radiographs, including 3-D images of the area where the lost tooth is to pinpoint the placement of the implant. The doctor will then open up the gum and surgically implant a titanium anchor into the jawbone and then reclose the gum. Over a time period of 3 - 6 months the anchor bonds with the bone and essentially becomes part of the bone, this provides an exceptionally strong and stable root for the new tooth. In a second phase of the process our doctor will reopen the gum and place a post on the anchor, which will be topped by a crown. The porcelain crown forms the top of the tooth with the biting and chewing surfaces.
